Middle Side Kick (横蹴り 中段 両側)

Middle Side Kick - Both Sides in Karate

The Middle Side Kick - Both Sides is a Karate technique where you quickly lift your knee to the side, keep your foot close to your body, and extend your leg straight out. The strike is delivered using the heel with the toes pulled back and the foot held parallel to the ground.

Executing this drill on both sides trains immediate leg retraction back into your guard position. Repeating the movement on the opposite side establishes fluidity, control, and consistent foot mechanics.

This technique is practiced during Karate stance and kicking drills to develop steady rhythm, balance, and explosiveness while returning to a ready guard position on both sides.

Common mistakes

  • Striking with the toes instead of pulling them back and aiming with the heel.
  • Neglecting core engagement, leading to poor balance and instability during the kick.
  • Failing to control the retraction after impact, which compromises your balance and guard.
  • Over-tension in the body, which reduces the overall speed and power of the strike.
