Middle Kick (回し蹴り 中段 両側)
The Middle Kick is a Karate kicking technique executed by lifting the knee to the side, pivoting on the standing foot, and turning the hips. It is designed to strike a target using the top of the foot or the shin.
To complete the technique, the leg snaps forward to deliver the blow before being quickly retracted. The practitioner then immediately returns to their guard position.
How to do it
- Step 1 Quickly lift your knee to the side, keeping your foot pointed.\nPivot on your standing foot while turning your hips.\nSnap your leg forward, striking with the top of your foot or shin.\nRetract your leg quickly after impact.\nReturn to your guard position.
Keep your body relaxed to generate speed and fluidity.\nEngage your core and pivot on the ball of your foot for maximum power.\nMaintain a steady rhythm without rushing to improve control.\nFocus on full hip rotation to enhance both reach and impact.\nRetract your leg quickly after the kick to stay balanced and ready.
Common mistakes
- Rushing the movement instead of maintaining a steady rhythm, which decreases control.
- Neglecting full hip rotation and failing to pivot on the ball of the foot, which reduces reach and power.
- Leaving the leg extended after the strike instead of retracting it quickly, which compromises balance.
