Front Kick (前蹴り 両側)

Front Kick - Both Sides in Karate

The Front Kick - Both Sides is a fundamental Karate kicking drill performed by alternating front kicks with each leg. To execute the movement, quickly lift your knee toward your chest, extend your leg to strike with the ball of your foot, and immediately retract the kicking leg before returning to your guard position and repeating on the opposite side.

This technique conditions both legs to deliver quick, precise strikes forward while maintaining control, balance, and an upright guard position.

This drill is used during Karate training to develop symmetrical kicking rhythm, explosive leg retraction, and control when returning to a defensive guard position.

Front Kick - Both Sides demonstrated by the Karate Training coach.

How to do it

  1. Step 1 Quickly lift your knee, bending your leg towards your chest.\nExtend your foot forward, striking with the ball of your foot.\nRetract your leg immediately after impact.\nReturn to your guard position.\nRepeat with the other leg.
Coach tip

Engage your core and keep your upper body relaxed for better balance.\nSnap your kick with speed and precision to maximize impact.\nMaintain a steady rhythm to develop control and explosiveness.\nRetract your leg quickly after each kick to improve technique.\nBreathe out sharply with each kick to enhance power and focus.

Common mistakes

  • Leaving the kicking leg extended after impact instead of retracting it immediately.
  • Tensing the upper body or failing to engage the core, which destabilizes balance.
  • Striking with an improper foot position rather than contacting with the ball of the foot.
  • Holding your breath during impact instead of exhaling sharply with each kick.
