Back Kick (後ろ蹴り 両側)

Back Kick - Both Sides in Karate

The Back Kick - Both Sides is a Karate kicking technique where you rotate your body and extend your leg straight backward to strike with your heel. Executing this kick symmetrically builds fluid footwork and balance across both legs.

The movement relies on turning to look over your shoulder, lifting your knee, and driving the heel directly toward the target. Retracting the leg quickly allows you to recover seamlessly back into your guard position.

How to do it

  1. Step 1 Turn your body and look over your shoulder.\nLift your knee while keeping your other foot planted.\nExtend your leg straight back, hitting with your heel.\nQuickly retract your leg after the kick.\nReturn to your guard position.
Coach tip

Engage your core and keep your upper body relaxed for better balance.\nExplode with power from the standing leg to generate maximum force.\nKeep your eyes on the target until the last moment for precision.\nControl your retraction to maintain speed and fluidity between kicks.\nStay light on your feet and maintain a steady rhythm for better execution.

Common mistakes

  • Striking with the toes or flat foot instead of extending the leg straight back to hit with the heel.
  • Taking your eyes off the target early instead of keeping them focused until the moment of impact.
  • Failing to engage your core, causing your upper body to tense up and disrupt your balance.
  • Rushing the kick without controlling the retraction, which reduces overall speed and fluidity between strikes.
